When you travel abroad you must make sure you have good medical coverage. You can receive health care benefits outside your home country if you have Visitor Medical Insurance. When your health care costs are paid by the insurance company your family’s assets are protected.

Your health is your most valuable resource, make sure it is protected. United States offers the most advanced treatments and medical facilities in the world. It also comes with astronomical costs. You must be adequately prepared especially when you are a visitor in another country.

The Visitor medical plans designed for travelers can cover expenses arising out of a sudden sickness or injury. These expenses can include doctor office visits, surgery, blood tests, X rays, prescriptions. Some plans also include medical evacuation. Visitor medical plans however, do not typically cover chronic illnesses and pre existing conditions.

Some important features of Visitor Medical Plans that you must consider before buying a plan:

1. Type of Benefits: Not all plans provide benefits for maternity, preventive care (child immunization, regular health physicals etc.), and dental expenses. It is important for you to prioritize your desired benefits and features.

2. Coverage period: Some plans are renewable up to five years while some are not renewable. Some plans can be bought for a minimum of five days and some require a minimum three month purchase.

3. Plan coverage limit: You must purchase a plan with the coverage amount that suits your needs and your budget. It is best to purchase a plan with a high limit with a low deductible to minimize out of pocket costs. Such a plan can also be the most expensive. You must balance the plan limit and deductible such that the Visitor medical plan suits your budget.

4. Visa Status: Certain types of visas (i.e. J1 and J2 visas) require specific benefits and levels of coverage. So, double check your visa type and learn about the insurance requirements.

If selecting a Visitor insurance plan seems too overwhelming, consult an experienced insurance agent. Make sure the insurance agent has adequate knowledge of the plans designed for visitors and travelers.
