Travel Restrictions By Homeland Security For Infants
Posted at Oct 24th, 2008 in Travel Tips
If you are traveling with an infant and you are alone the effort you have to exert and the amount of time that you have to allow can be more than double than when you are on your own. Homeland security travel restrictions involved in todayas travel can be challenging to say the least.
To face these challenges, your preparation should start well before you leave your home. If you are departing not from your home but from another less familiar point, such as a hotel in a city you are visiting, or a friend’s or a relatives home, there could be additional considerations you have to make.
If you are departing to or from a foreign country then homeland security travel restrictions can be even more challenging. Your preparations will have to start several weeks in advance of your departure. The first step is to know how long you are going to be away in the foreign country. This decides whether you want to apply for separate passports for you and your infant. If your visit is only for a short period (few months or less) then it might be possible to include your infant’s name in your passport.
If your travel plans include a foreign country then visas for both you and your infant may need to be obtained. You will need a birth certificate for your child, and immunizations completed, along with proof may be necessary. These records should also be carried with you as well. The above discussion applies to most foreign countries, however it would be a good idea to check with your travel agent or do your own research online if traveling to such countries as Canada is less restrictive.
Therefore the first step of getting all the necessary travel documents together is done, you can now focus on your infant’s special needs. These should be able to be addressed without much concern, since infant’s are needy individuals, however their needs can be met at home or away from home. However, here are some special points to consider.
Most airlines allow infant carriers, however you should check with homeland security to make sure your carrier meets the required restrictions. For instance, the carrier needs to be able to fit inside the x-ray scanning mechanism at security check-in, and should have no sharp metal points that can be removed from the carrier.
Special attention will also need to be given to your infants medicine. Homeland security restrictions state that only a certain amount of liquids may be carried by your person. If not breast feeding then powder formula in a plastic bag might be a smart option. Bottled water can be purchased once the security check-point has been crossed, and used to mix with the powder. Liquid medications should also be in clearly labeled containers, and contain no more than the amount specified in the volume.
Traveling should be fun and rewarding even when traveling with an infant. Homeland security restrictions are implemented for a reason, and though it adds to the travel preparation it ensures safe and orderly travel. This is certainly the most important first step towards havning fun while traveling.
