The RV Driver’s Guide To Safety

Being a safe driver isn’t as simple as being an experienced driver. Logging many hours behind the wheel is obviously a very important part of being a competent driver. However, even the best and most experienced drivers can have bad days due to several factors. Here are a few of the things that you should be aware of when you are behind the wheel of an RV.
Fatigue. Driving an RV comes with an extra responsibility. The simple fact is that your RV is several times larger and heavier than most cars, SUVs and trucks. This, of course, has serious implications if you ever are in an accident. What could be a “fender bender” for a car or truck could easily turn into a fatal accident, due to the size and weight of your vehicle. For this important reason, it is in everyone’s best interest that you stay alert and rested when you are behind the wheel. Fighting off fatigue means getting enough sleep and enough rest. This is part of why investing in a good RV mattress and RV bedding makes so much sense.
Alcohol. Clearly, abuse alcohol or other substances that may impair your judgment are obviously to be avoided. Just as fatigue could lead to a serious accident, the same could be stated for having “one to many.” In a word, make certain that you do not drink and drive. It is better to just keep your RV where it is and get a good night of sleep!
Another factor to consider when you are on the road is your general health. If you are feeling sick or coming down with the flu, this could impair your ability to drive safely. Don’t forget that if you take cold or flu medication, this can also make you sleepy. Sometimes we all get sick on road trips when we least expect it. If you need to take medicine, make sure that it is the non-drowsy formula.
However, if you are still feeling tired, sleep may be the only answer. When you are traveling in an RV, make sure that you have a good RV mattress ready for these types of situations. Once you have taken a nap or even gone to bed early for the night, you will wake up well rested and ready to continue on your journey.
