Tips for Summer Festivals

by Ian Kleine

Going into a summer festival whether day or night, is a very fun and enjoyable experience for the family. It provides a good opportunity for bonding with your kids (or for the kids to bond with their families, who oftentimes do not meet anymore due to constraints in time). So anyway, you decide to spend your time with them in the state fair, or maybe in the state festival. And we do it at night. We don’t want anyone fainting from heat stroke, or getting singed due to sunburn. But there is a hidden threat lurking in the next corner. Or rather, flying around.

When you are in Oklahoma, diversity is the name of the game. Of the many craft shows held here every year, there are those that are dedicated to ethnic groups of every kind, including their culture and cuisine. As such, if you plan to make a small business selling crafts in Oklahoma, then you should learn to be equally as diverse as they are.

For example, you could be attending a Latino festival in one month, and then go straight to a Vietnamese themed on the next. You’ll learn to plan ahead when you do this. If you have acquired handcrafted items, planning may be as early as a few months before the event. Your crafts should be in line with the fair, after all. But the question is, how will you be able to prepare early if you do not know the details of the event in question?

As a Biker I love to take long Rides on my 2007 Harley Davidson, Nightrain. Some times a trip to Connecticut where one has the freedom of choice to decided if they want to wear a Helmet or not is a great place to go. Often I head up to the NY Catskill Mountains, Where a Burger and a Beer at Nicks Waterfall House in West Conesville can be the perfect end to a day of Cruising threw the Mountains.

Then there is another of my Favorite places to ride to, The Lake George NY area. My Uncle has a small Cabin in the Mountains right outside of the town of Lake George where I often stay. The area has some great long and winding roads for riding, These roads will relax even the most stressed Motorcycle rider.

Fired Up at Oregon Craft Shows

by Rick Amorey

Crafting is a truly amazing pastime. Have you ever marveled at small trinkets, baubles and statuettes that you come across at bazaars, kiosks and fairs? Chances are good that you have met these skilled artisans without even knowing it. You see, craftspeople are a sentimental lot; and they’re usually the ones at the booth where you saw the pieces.

But then, you may well be too aware of it already. Perhaps you’ve been into crafts as well, and you just showed your work to those that are closest to you. This is okay; we all started out as closet craftspeople. But if you want to get better, if you want to get recognized, you would have to go out there and show your stuff to the people of Oregon.
